Anyway just wanna take this chance to share some of the things i learnt indirectly from my school choir here. =)
On practice days, normally, the conductor would come in for a whole 2-3hrs to try to perfect a few songs, shape the song etc.
But last friday(16/3), it was a different friday.
Miss Tham(my conductor) came in for practice, but after doing just the first few parts of the first song, she simply just stopped and ended it.
The choir was losing focus, dint sing well, people were a bit bo chap etc.
She continued on to speak to the choir, saying,
"either you it, or you don't." ,
"no excuses. they only serve to make you weak and irresponsible."
Then she went on to talk about the choir, its practices and so on.
saying that we are doing what we are doing because we think what a choir SHOULD DO, instead of doing it because we truly want to do it.
Everything simply becomes mundane and routine. practices, learning parts in sectionals etc. there is no more joy and fun in choir because people do it for the sake of doing it, like robots.
People keep on singing, when they have no song in them. ironic huh?
As she continued to share, she struggled more and more with herself as it was becoming harder to share.
There was just this obvious strain on her face.
She simply HAD to bring the word "God" in, but she couldn't.
It wasn't allowed in school.
All the crap about multi-racial, regardless of religion thing, the regulations held her back.
she couldn't help but to hover around the topic of singing for yourself, growing yourself in character, focus and self-disipline, and singing with others to produce wonderful music that is worth remembering.
She was asking for us to put our hearts and passion in this choir, to seek enjoyment out of it. simply for ourselves.
i thought to myself, " what a whole load of crap about self-centeredness.
everything is about "me, myself, and i". "
There HAS GOT to be a higher purpose for practising so hard, learning the parts and notes like mad.
A concert held in victoria concert hall?
Competition that comes every 2 years?
Too shallow a purpose for anyone to swallow. It has to be God. there is no other answer.
The sweetest sound to God across the universe, is but the voice of each child he has created.
Our singing is for God's pleasure, to worship him, and to seek him.
No way would he give us our voices to do mindless singing just for
applause, accolades, aquisition or a piece of syf certificate.
And in this worship, as a choir, we seek to create a total worship experience,
for both believers and non-believers,
painting a picture of God to our friends out there.
This IS the higher purpose for why we do what we do,
why we sing what we sing. For none but Christ alone.
Be more convicted whenever you open your mouth to sing, and make every session effective and efficient!
For what you are doing is for God, and God deserves your best!
Never give Jesus half hearted work. One logic stays, "either you do it, or you don't."
Let our heart attitudes be right in this, for attitude, not aptitude, determines the altitude.
The spirit of excellence is what we will carry all around us amen?
Let's do our best to help amplify the worship evangelism in service!
just try imagining the number of people who will miss out on a more vivid picture of God's love
if we don't put in our best!
ps: everyone let's make it a point to be punctual for practices, diligently practise our songs and vocals yea?
Hebrews 12:2"
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."-louis.
